  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To investigate traditional behaviour practices that influence
  9.        transmission of HIV among the Luo of Kenya. METHODS: Rapid appraisal
  10.        approach involving in-depth interviews with a convenient sample of 92
  11.        key informants (widows of Luo men dead in the preceding 12 months).
  12.        RESULTS: 47 (51%) widows were already inherited, 34 (36%) had plans to
  13.        be inherited, 11 refused. Sex is an essential component of widow
  14.        inheritance. 80% of men inheriting were married, one third had history
  15.        of previously inheriting other widows, some were paid to inherit. One
  16.        third of widows inherited had divorced previous partners and had new
  17.        ones. CONCLUSION: Widow inheritance is a determinant of sexual behaviour
  18.        among the Luo and is a risk factor for HIV transmission. Education and
  19.        advocacy to change be enhanced at community level.
